How to Mix Patterns in Interior Design

Mixing patterns is fun! Its like rediscovering your 8 year old self!

Mixing patterns in interior design is not as difficult as you think.

Start by choosing your color palette.  I love to base this on my area rug as I always say “it’s the largest piece of artwork in your room”.  Another source could be a favorite wallpaper or a piece of wall art.  Choose 1, two or three colors for this color palette.

Next choose a favorite head turning fabric that is large in scale pattern. Use bold patterns on larger items like sofas, wallpaper or curtains. In this photo to the left, you can clearly see that the large-scale pattern here is coming from the beautiful wallpaper. In addition, it has dictated the color palette for the room.

Follow this with some medium and small-scale patterns that complement your larger scale pattern. Smaller, subtler patterns on pillows or accessories will provide balance to your space. You will want to avoid using too many patterns of the same scale as it can overwhelm the space.

Now choose a more geometric or striped pattern Don’t be afraid to mix different patterns together, such as florals with geometrics. The key is to keep the color palette consistent and let the patterns complement each other. To the left you can see geometrics incorporated beautifully in both spaces.

Finally find some solids.  The eye needs to find a place to rest so be sure to provide that. This is a perfect opportunity to begin incorporating different textures along with patterns adding depth and richness to your design. Think about velvet, linen, leather, and metallics.

Some additional tips… If you are going for a color drenching look you will keep these prints in the same color. However, for more drama choose colors that are opposite for a greater impact and interest.

Remember, interior design is all about expressing your personal style, so have fun with it and

don’t be afraid to experiment!
